Video podcasts for web designers
No matter how experienced you are (or think you are), there are always new things to learn when it comes to producing great content for the web. Video podcasts are one of my favourite methods of keeping up to date with emerging technologies and learning new skills. Unlike audio podcasts, video podcasts tend to focus on how-tos, demos and tutorials, making them perfect for anyone looking to improve their knowledge.
NETTUTS
Part of the Envato Tuts+ Network, the NETTUTS video podcasts feature screencasts on a variety of subjects including HTML, CSS, jQuery, PHP – including CodeIgnighter – WordPress customisation and much more.
The screenscasts are often linked into a series based on a single topic such as WordPress or CodeIgnighter, building on the previous tutorials each week (or whenever a new update is posted, they’re not always regular). [iTunes]
Layers TV
Layers TV is the weekly video podcast from the guys at Layers Magazine, “on newsstands everywhere”. Layers Magazine covers Adobe applications, so you would expect the video podcast to also feature Adobe applications, and you’d be right.
Episodes are typically split into two sections, with Corey Barker taking one half and Rafael “RC” Conception taking the other. They each usually cover a separate application in Adobe’s Creative Suite, however RC tends to look at other web services from time to time and Corey Barker likes playing with Wacom products on the show.
If you own any Adobe applications, Layers TV is certainly worth a look. [iTunes]
Web Design TV
.net magazine’s video podcast is hosted by Paul Wyatt and focuses a lot on Adobe applications. It’s really one for the designer, Dreamweaver tutorials do feature pretty frequently, but he does line up some good interviews.
My one criticism? He isn’t very consistent volume-wise. One minute you can hear him perfectly fine, then he seems to be running short on breath and starts whispering. Actual whispering.
Sound/voice issues aside, the interviews are very good and certainly worth watching. [iTunes]
CSS Tricks
CSS Tricks, created by Chris Coyier, is a web design community with a great collection of screencasts. As you have probably guessed, a lot of the videos focus on CSS techniques, but they also move into jQuery, Photoshop tips, WordPress customisation, setting up hosting and pushing email account through Google Apps. Definitely worth subscribing to. [iTunes]
unmatchedstyle
unmatchedstyle is a popular website design gallery, featuring examples of the best of the web. Their weekly video podcast features Gene & Jay (A.K.A, 2 guys in the corner) reviewing the design of a handful of websites.
They cover everything from layout, colour, typography, navigation, usability, copy, use of current trends and even scrolling and the naming of websites.
Of course it is just their opinion, albeit an educated one, so don’t cry too hard if they criticise a feature you’ve spent weeks to get working on your own site, your users will probably love it. [iTunes]

Y’know, I subscribe to CSS Trick’s RSS feed, but never realised that it had a podcast.
Thanks for that!
